Wound Care for Chronic Venous Ulcer

Having a non-healing wound can be very frustrating and demoralizing. You may have had this wound so long that you don’t know if it will ever heal. It can. We can help!

When you come in, you will receive an assessment of your wound, surrounding tissue, and entire lower extremity. Due to modern technology, we have highly specialized treatments and wound dressings that will be customized to your wound. The treatment and dressing will likely change as your wound improves. While treating a chronic wound, it is important to stick to the schedule your provider gives so that healing doesn’t stall or reverse.

One of the most important aspects of venous leg ulcer healing is COMPRESSION. Afterall, the swelling and excess pressure is, in part, responsible for the wound forming in the first place. Compression comes in many forms: special bandages, stockings, wraps, or other garments. Sometimes it’s necessary to sleep in a special garment, but often daytime wear is sufficient. It is important that you are measured for your compression wear. If the garment is too small or too big it will not aid in wound healing the way a properly fitted garment will.  If you are unable to tolerate compression garments or they are too difficult for you to put on – we have a lot of options. Make sure to discuss your concerns before you take home a pair of stockings you are unlikely to wear. If you can’t wear them – they won’t help you!

In many cases, venous ulcers occur due to a poorly functioning vein nearby. We are often able to correct the vein problem with a foam medication injection into the vein. This is done using ultrasound so the clinician can see the medication going into the vein. This will also speed the healing of the venous leg ulcer.
