What is Conservative Treatment?
Conservative treatment for vein disease, lymphedema, and lipedema usually involves an exercise program like walking, some type of compression (usually stockings), a healthy diet, and possibly weight loss or a course of an anti-inflammatory medication (NO “s”) like Ibuprofen. The nice thing about conservative treatment is that you can begin before you even come in to see us!
Why Conservative Treatment?
Conservative treatment should be an ongoing part of any treatment plan your provider recommends for the above conditions. This type of treatment will not heal the disease, but it can help manage symptoms. It often works best for mild disease or in conjunction with other treatments. In addition, many insurance companies require you to have tried conservative treatment for a period of time (varies from 2 weeks to 6 months) before they will approve more advanced treatments for these diseases.
If you’ve tried compression in the past and felt it didn’t work, you may have had the wrong type of stocking or stockings that did not fit properly. We have staff specifically trained in measuring for these garments at Crosswalk. No matter your situation or objection, we can help you find the right compression for your legs and lifestyle.
