Lipedema

Lipedema is a chronic condition characterized by abnormal and disproportionate fat accumulation in the hips, thighs, and/or calves and ankles (arms and buttocks may also be affected). It almost exclusively occurs in women (rarely in men). This excess fat is NOT due to weight gain or obesity, but may be due to genetics, hormones, inflammation, and metabolism.

About Lipedema

Signs that you may have Lipedema…

Legs or hips are larger than expected in comparison to the rest of the body.

The fat distribution is the same on both sides of the body.

Pain or tenderness to the legs – many people with lipedema don’t want their legs to be touched at all.
Easy bruising to the legs.
Fat in the legs is unaffected by usual methods of weight loss (diet and exercise).
Hypermobile (very flexible) joints.
The hands and feet are not affected.
There is swelling in the legs.

Treatments

How to treat Lipedema

There are many treatments for lipedema; most are aimed at decreasing edema and other symptoms and maximizing overall health. Common treatments include massage for lymphatic drainage, compression garments, exercise, nutrition, supplementation, and compression devices. Treatments like deep breathing, walking, and dry brushing are simple to do and can be started at home.

While there is currently no known cure, that doesn’t mean there aren’t good treatments. It’s important to understand that multiple treatments may have an additive effect, for example: compression therapy may be helpful. But compression therapy, plus daily exercise, plus regular lymphatic drainage massage – will likely have a superior effect.

In addition to these treatments, some people may benefit from surgery. Regarding surgery – it’s important to understand that you will need to do the treatments mentioned above both before surgery and ongoing after surgery. Also, it’s very important to choose a surgeon who understands and specializes in lipedema surgeries.

Because Lipidema is a chronic condition, many women find help from a licensed therapist and a registered dietician to be helpful in long term management of the condition.

If you are experiencing symptoms of lipedema, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider with a strong understanding of lipedema for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
